Routes to Luther - experience world history
Travelling through Luther's country in Central Germany
We invite you to get to know Luther, the places where he lived, his time and a cultural landscape that is outstanding in German and European history.
Altenburg, Eisenach, Erfurt, Schmalkalden, Torgau, Weimar and the two Luther towns of Eisleben and Wittenberg are home to the most important Luther sites, where the life and work of the reformer can be experienced in direct contact with the original locations.
The ‘trails’ lead, for example, to Wartburg Castle and the Luther House in Eisenach, the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt, Wilhelmsburg Castle in Schmalkalden, Luther's birthplace and death house in Eisleben, Luther's childhood home in Mansfeld, Hartenfels Castle in Torgau, the Luther House and Melanchthon House in Wittenberg, St Peter and Paul's Church in Weimar and the castle church in Altenburg.
There, visitors can look forward to permanent exhibitions on various aspects of the Reformation, as well as special exhibitions, expert guided tours, concerts, lectures, conferences and much more.
The cultural tourism initiative ‘Ways to Luther’, founded in 2000, is based on the continuous and transnational co-operation of the representatives of the Luther towns and Luther sites in Central Germany.
The main task is to communicate Central Germany as a shared cultural landscape and travel destination to the authentic sites of Luther's life and the history of the Reformation.
‘Wege zu Luther’ or “Routes to Luther” is now an established brand and is attracting increasing attention as a successful, transnational network for spiritual travel.
Our travel suggestions are an ideal basis for organising trips in the footsteps of the great reformer Martin Luther. With our brochure ‘Wege zu Luther - Weltgeschichte erleben’, especially for individual guests and small groups, as well as the flyer ‘Radwege zu Luther’ for active guests and our website, we provide comprehensive information about the Luther cities in Central Germany and look forward to supporting your trip.
